چکیده
Term Definition alga(e) Primitive, often aquatic, plants that carry on photosynthesis but lack the flowers, roots, stems, and leaves of higher plants. algal bloom High concentrations or densities of algae. allopathy The suppression of growth of an organism by another due to the release of a toxic substance. amino acids The building blocks for the synthesis of proteins. Can be a source of nitrogen and/or carbon. ammonium An ion, NH4, derived from ammonia by combination with a hydrogen ion that can be an inorganic source of nitrogen. anthropogenic (source of nutrients) Derived from humans (sewage) or human activities (e.g., crop farming, high intensity animal operations, automobile exhaust pipes, and urban runoff).

Aureococcus anophageflerens: Causes and ecological consequences of brown tides in U.S. mid-Atlantic coastal waters
Aureococcus anq~ha&erens is a picoplanktonic alga that since 1985 has bloomed in coastal embayments of the western mid-Atlantic, ranging from Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island, to Barnegat Bay, New Jersey, with greatest incidence of rccurrencc in Long Island bays, New York. Blooms of this small alga, referred to as “brown tide,” can persist for several months during late spring and summer at densi...
متن کاملTidal prediction using time series analysis of Buoy observations
Although tidal observations which are extracted from coastal tide gages, have higher accuracy due to their higher sampling rate, installing these types of gages can impose some spatial limitation since we cannot use every part of sea to install them. To solve this limitation, we can employ satellite altimetry observations. However, satellite altimetry observations have lower sampling rate. Acco...
متن کاملViruses as Potential Regulators of Regional Brown Tide Blooms Caused by the Alga, Aureococcus anophagefferens
Blooms of the brown tide organism Aureococcus anophagefferens have recurred in the coastal bays in New Jersey since 1995 and in the coastal bays of Long Island since 1985. Intracellular viral-like particles (VLPs) were documented during 1999–2000 brown tide blooms in Little Egg Harbor, New Jersey, but it was not determined whether cells were infected during the termination of the bloom. The obj...
متن کاملIntegrating Long Tide Gauge Records with Projection Modelling Outputs. A Case Study: New York
Sea level rise is one of the key artefacts of a warming climate which is predicted to have profound impacts for coastal communities over the course of the 21st century and beyond. The IPCC provide regular updates (5–7 years) on the global status of the science and projections of climate change to assist guide policy, adaptation and mitigation endeavours. Increasingly sophisticated climate model...
متن کاملRapid Communication Contribution of relative sea-level rise to historical hurricane flooding in New York City
Flooding during hurricanes is a hazard for New York City. Flood height is determined by storm surge characteristics, timing (high or low tide) and relative sea-level (RSL) change. The contribution from these factors is estimated for seven historical hurricanes (1788–2012) that caused flooding in New York City. Measurements from The Battery tide gauge and historical accounts are supplemented wit...
